Counterpoint

Counterpoint - An AI-Powered Perspective Comparison for News Readers

  • What it is: An AI-powered Chrome extension that surfaces alternative viewpoints on news articles
  • What it does: Shows how the same topic is covered from different political or ideological perspectives
  • AI used for: Topic and claim extraction, source and perspective classification, matching related articles across the political spectrum
  • Built as: Browser extension prototype
  • Tools: ChatGPT, Claude, NotebookLM, Figma Make
  • Why it matters: Reduces echo chambers by making other perspectives visible at the moment of reading

Problem

Many readers consume news inside algorithmic bubbles. Articles are rarely read alongside opposing interpretations, making it difficult to understand what the other side is actually saying—as opposed to how it’s characterized.

Insight

Understanding disagreement requires exposure, not persuasion. Readers are more likely to form nuanced opinions when alternative perspectives are presented clearly, calmly, and in context—without forcing equivalence or false balance.

Prototype

I designed Counterpoint, a lightweight browser extension that:

  • Detects the topic of a news article
  • Identifies credible coverage from alternative viewpoints
  • Displays a concise “other side” summary alongside the original article
  • Tracks a reader’s weekly exposure to different perspectives

Outcome & Implications

Counterpoint positions AI as a bridge across perspectives, not an arbiter of truth. By lowering the friction to encounter opposing views, it supports more informed, less reactive news consumption.

Together with NewsWiseInContext, and CredCheck, this project explores how AI can strengthen understanding, agency, and trust in modern media ecosystems.
